Celtic booked their place in the last eight of the League Cup with an impressive 3-1 win over Hibernian at Parkhead.
Brendan Rodgers's men completed a quick-fire Premiership and League Cup double over David Gray's capital side with a little help from Celtic's wingers as Daizen Maeda notched a double with Nicolas Kuhn also bagging a counter.
It took Celtic all of four minutes to get the ball rolling in this one as Maeda who replaced compatriot Kyogo Furuhashi in attack notched the opener.
Maeda led the line excellently and it was he who cleverly dinked the ball into the net from six yards following Hatate's accurate low centre from the right.
Within 17 minutes, Maeda had claimed his second as he latched on to Kuhn's lofted through ball and he held off the Hibs defence to poke home and Celtic were two to the good.
However, the visitors stung the hosts on 35 minutes when Mykola Kukharevuch thumped in a sumptuous diving header following a free-kick beyond Kasper Schmeichel who has still to make a save as the Celtic goalkeeper.
It was 3-1 to Celtic on 56 minutes when Maeda closed down Marvin Ekpiteta and Kuhn cleverly homed in on goalkeeper Josef Bursik who could only cannon an attempted clearance off the German and the ball trundled into the net.
Man of the moment £9.5 million signing Adam Idah took his bow on the hour mark as he replaced James Forrest to a rapturous reception.
The hosts always looked comfortable in this one and it was no surprise that it was Rodgers's men who ensured a safe passage into the League Cup quarter-final.
Magical Maeda likes playing up top, doesn't he?
The last time Maeda played as a centre-forward he scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 Scottish Cup win over Livingston at Celtic Park back in March. He was at it again as he replaced Kyogo in the number nine position. Maeda is not unfamiliar with the striking role as he has played there for both club and country. There was a sense of deja-vu about his goal as well as the Japanese attacker notched his first-ever goal for Celtic against Hibs at Celtic Park on his debut back in 2022 when he scored early on that occasion as well. He repeated the dose this time after five minutes as he scooped the ball into the net with ease following Hatate's excellent low cutback. It was Maeda at the double when he raced onto Nicolas Kuhn's high clipped pass to show strength and get a touch to nudge it past in the Hibs goal to put Celtic 2-0 up inside 17 minutes. It was Maeda's 30th and 31st goal of his Celtic career so far. Maeda was given a warm embrace by his manager as he left the field and the two men even shared a joke. It was a good day's work from Maeda who deservedly waltzed off with the man-of-the-match award.
Nicolas 'Peacock' Khun knuckling down and focusing on the job at hand
The German wideman is playing out of his skin at the minute. He has proved to be unplayable at times for both Kilmarnock and Hibs thus far. It's early days and sterner tests lie in wait. However, the 24-year-old has already showcased his knack for getting into high-quality goal-scoring and assisting positions as well as his superb dribbling skills allied to some diligent defensive work then he is fast becoming the player that Rodgers felt he had signed last season. Kuhn is a constant menace and is proving to be the ultimate team player. It was Kuhn's pass that sent Hatate scampering down the right in the move that led to the first goal. It was his clever lofted pass that released Maeda for his second goal of the contest. He is a completely different animal from the player that turned up in the last campaign. This could well prove to be a huge year for him and you have to hand it to Rodgers...again! It is no coincidence that Kuhn is improving game by game. He has better energy and there is more aggression in his attacking play. He got his reward for shutting down Hibs goalkeeper Bursik to make it three goals in three games. Consistency will be the key for Kuhn but he has made a blistering start to the new campaign. Kuhn is strutting his funky stuff...dare we say it...like a peacock!
The resurgence of James Forrest continues but was he denied a first-half penalty?
The renaissance of Forrest is alive and kicking. Rodgers is getting some tune out of the evergreen winger. The 33-year-old veteran thought he had won himself and his team a penalty kick when he appeared to be clotheslined by two Hibs defenders in the box. TV replays showed that the defending was good and that he had been kept at arm's length and outmuscled as the away rearguard stood firm. They have been given before though. It was a contentious moment in the game. There is no such thing as a soft penalty and referee Kevin Clancy and VAR operator Andrew Dallas were both convinced that it was not a spot-kick. That doesn't detract from the fact that Forrest had darted into a great position from wide on the left and was advancing into the box at speed. Forrest has enjoyed a stellar start to the season and on this form, he could make significant contributions to the Celtic cause this season. He cracked one over the crossbar after the interval. Forrest remains one of Rodgers's most trusted lieutenants on the park and it is no wonder. He is the epitome of coolness, and calmness and puts all of his big game experience to good use. That's 496 Celtic appearances and counting...
The second 'homecoming' of £9.5 million man Adam Idah
The Republic of Ireland striker came on to a huge Celtic Park ovation after clinching his £9.5 million return to the club. Forrest made way for the ex-Norwich City attacker just after the hour mark as Idah took his second Parkhead bow as an official Celtic player. The manager admitted beforehand that he was delighted to have Idah back and that the player was so happy to return. The big forward eased himself gently back into proceedings as Rodgers conceded that he is just a little bit behind his teammates in terms of his pre-season preparations. Those fitness levels will be improved upon and he will be up to speed in the fullness of time. Idah was always looking to make the darting runs away from the defender's shoulder in behind. The 23-year-old is a clever forward in those terms and he will stretch defences as he likes to get in behind and burst clean through in goal. He was denied a goal by the quick thinking of Bursik who sprinted off his line to thwart the striker from grabbing a dream 'debut' goal. Idah's time at Celtic will most definitely come.
