Detailed player ratings from Celtic's 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League...
Kasper Schmeichel - A literal spectator for the duration of the match bar a couple of half-chances, the Denmark captain had very little to do. He was raging with his teammates for allowing Wimmer to score, as the high standards of his fellow pros dropped for a split second. Will have busier nights, but a solid showing from the veteran keeper. 7
Alistair Johnston - The Canadian right-back clearly enjoyed the battle with former Rangers man Vladimir Weiss, with both picking up first-half bookings thanks to their tussles on the right wing. His bravery in his aggression was the difference in Celtic getting a penalty that led to their third goal, as he nipped in front of the sleeping defender to take the challenge in the box. One of many standouts. 8
Cameron Carter-Vickers - Overshadowed by his defensive partner Scales, CCV got caught a couple of times, getting booked late on in proceedings. Still, he was largely solid throughout, as he and the Irishman kept Slovan very quiet throughout the game. Will have busier nights, but impressive once again. 7
Liam Scales - What a performance from the Irishman - did he even lose a tackle last night? Sublime for the duration, Scales quite rightly got the Player of the Match from the stadium announcer, as his dominating performance was not lost on anyone watching at Celtic Park. It was his header that led to the first goal, as he bulleted home a great cross by Engels from a corner. The towering defender has gone up a level this season - quite brilliant from a man who deserves his flowers. Sensational from Scales. 9
Greg Taylor - Arguably the weakest of the back 4, Taylor had a quiet match, though he still was solid enough throughout. Maybe should have done better to stop Wilmer’s consolation goal, but that was a side note on what was a largely perfect night for his team. It is up to Valle to take his likely chance at left-back when he gets granted it at the weekend versus Falkirk. A decent showing from the Scotland international regardless. 7
Callum McGregor - What more is there to say about the captain at this point? Very much a standout, McGregor was a general in the middle of the park, barking orders throughout to his teammates all over the pitch for the duration of the game. Arguably Celtic’s player of the season thus far, McGregor was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet AGAIN with a long-range strike, though it was his work in the engine room that caught the eye of those at Celtic Park. A tour de force in midfield play from a player on the very top of his game. Magnificent. 9
Reo Hatate - Much better from the Japan midfielder, who justified his selection with an impressive performance on the biggest stage. Not everything was perfect from Hatate, though he controlled proceedings and the tempo of the game whenever he was in possession - Slovan had no idea what to do with the mercurial middle-man when he was on the ball. Hatate is one of the players who excites you on the ball - he’s a risk-taker. More of them came off for him - a great sight for those in attendance. Strong. 8
Arne Engels - £11 million seems like a bit of a bargain for this man, in all honesty. The definition of ‘class on grass’, Engels strolled this game, scoring a goal and an assist on what was a European masterclass from the midfielder - his very first one! It was his ball that led to Scales’ opener, as well as his second penalty in as many games, though it was what he did in open play that really caught the eye. His pressing, passing and movement were all spot-on, as he made Celtic Park his own for the full 90 minutes. What a player this club have on their hands - a sensational showing. 9
Nicolas Kuhn - After a quiet first half, many would have maybe been calling for Kuhn’s number to be up in place of Forrest, though he would silence any doubters with his part in Celtic’s second goal. Direct and pacy, the German winger got to the byline before delivering a perfect ball into the path of Kyogo - who could not miss. He would threaten again, in what was a sublime 15-minute spell for Celtic to start the second half. His impressive start to the season continues. 7
Kyogo Furuhashi - After missing two glorious chances that a striker of his quality should be scoring, Kyogo silenced his own doubters by tapping home Kuhn’s delightful cross, which was put on a plate for him by the winger. This evaporated any frustrations felt at half-time, as the winger could - and should - have scored three or four in this game. Still, another Champions League goal for the talismanic figure, who will look to kick on and score on a more regular basis - especially with Idah breathing down his neck. 7
Daizen Maeda - You know what you’re going to get with Maeda in a game - brilliance mixed with moments of madness - but he is so, so effective in so many areas. The winger led Celtic’s press from the front, not giving his marker a second to breathe in possession. After missing two glorious chances in the opening half, he would finish off a lovely team goal, slotting past the goalkeeper with a well-taken strike into his far-bottom corner. His pros outweigh his cons - the epitome of a cult hero at the club. Brilliant from ‘Duracell Daizen’. 8
Subs:
James Forrest - Another solid showing from the veteran, who kept up the high tempo that Kuhn - who he replaced - started. A great ball to Idah for the fifth and final goal - the winger continues to contribute in a good way. 5
Tony Ralston - On to safeguard Johnston, who was on a booking, Ralston put himself about for the duration of his time on the pitch. May get a start at the weekend due to rotation. 3
Adam Idah - Scored Celtic’s fifth of the night thanks to a lovely ball by fellow substitute Forrest, the Irishman finally broke his goalscoring duck since returning to the club permanently. The first of many, you’d imagine - clinical from Idah. 5
Paulo Bernardo - Came on late to shore things up, he showed a couple of nice touches on his brief spell on the pitch. 3
Auston Trusty - A nice moment for the American, who made his debut for Celtic in the closing stages. More from him on Sunday, you’d imagine. 2
