Detailed player ratings for Celtic's 2-0 win over Hearts at home in the Scottish Premiership...

Kasper Schmeichel - A busier half than usual for the Denmark captain, he dealt with a couple of half-chances well from the opposition, coupled with good distribution with the ball at his feet. He kept his clean sheet once more, having dealt with a couple of chances that fell his way - equalling a long-standing record for shutouts that has stood for 118 years. What a signing and what a goalkeeper - tougher tests await. 7

Alistair Johnston - The right-back returned from his knock sustained on international break to play this one and endeavoured to make things happen on the right side of defence. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of the weakest displays of his Celtic career, as he was dispossessed on the ball on more than one occasion, putting his side under pressure. Better days ahead for the usually-solid right-back. 5

Cameron Carter-Vickers - A strong opening 45 from the American defender, who snuffed out everything that came his way concerning Hearts attacks. Arguably the player of the match, CCV allowed nothing to get past him from the likes of Vargas and Shankland, who were feeding off scraps in Celtic’s half. Another dominating performance from the imposing stopper, who looks right back to his best after a slight dip in form. Imperious. 8

Liam Scales - He applied himself well with a couple of timely tackles and interceptions, though he may count himself lucky that his hand-ball was overturned by VAR following the referee’s penalty decision. A solid game from the Irishman, though one stray pass near the end could have cost his team dearly. Overshadowed by his defensive partner, but a good day at the office for Scales. 7

Greg Taylor - One of the bright spots of the first half, the left-back pushed forward both on the flank and through the middle with his tireless energy and tempo. The defender had a really solid game, as he tried to make things happen on both ends of the pitch. Was unlucky with a couple of passes, and his delivery into Idah for what would have been his third goal was cruelly struck off thanks to VAR. 7

Callum McGregor - Authoritative as usual from the skipper, McGregor allowed Hatate and Engels to push forward when required, though his main contribution would come on the defensive end in the second half. It was his header in his own box that led to Celtic rushing up the park and scoring - a fact that will likely get lost in the furore of McCowan scoring. A stereotypically Callum McGregor-esque performance from the captain - brilliant as usual. 8

Arne Engels - After a first half in which he showed glimpses of his quality, the record-signing stepped up to convert the spot-kick awarded early in the restart. Side-footing the ball past Craig Gordon who dived the wrong way, the Belgian opened his account for his new club in a pressured situation, which takes guts to accomplish. Solid on the ball and unlucky not to score with a volley in the first half, the former Augsburg man looks to be another good acquisition for Celtic. Expect to see him shine on Wednesday. 8

Reo Hatate - A day to forget for Hatate, who was careless on the ball despite trying his hardest to make things happen.  He has to take better care of the ball when he is in possession, or he risks putting his side under pressure by gifting it to the opposition. Some bright moments, yes, but overall a poor display from a player you expect better from. Will be interesting to see if he keeps his spot on Wednesday over Bernardo. 5

Nicolas Kuhn - A mixed bag today from the German wide-man, who showed glimpses of quality but plenty to work on at the same time. He needs to learn when to release the ball at the right time - albeit, he has been productive this season. Some footwork defensively, but one of Kuhn’s poorer games on what has been a very solid start to his first full campaign. Hopefully, he bounces back quickly. 5

Kyogo Furuhashi - Unlucky not to be on the scoresheet today, Kyogo had two golden opportunities to convert past Craig Gordon - one which he missed the target completely and the other that the veteran keeper saved. Not as many touches as usual for the talismanic figure - perhaps he is keeping his goals for Europe starting on Wednesday. Nothing to worry about here. 6

Daizen Maeda - probably Maeda’s quietest game this season thus far, Gerald Taylor kept the winger very quiet for the majority of proceedings - a rare occurrence. He still ran himself into the ground, but his Costa Rican marker had enough in the tank to keep him at bay. A good effort, but Celtic’s number 38 has had better games this season - and will have in the future. A good shift but unproductive from ‘Duracell Daizen’. 6

Subs:

Paulo Bernardo - Was unlucky not to start today, though international duty may have had something to do with that decision. Some nice touches from the midfielder, who looks like a bargain at £3.5 million, in all honesty. Should start on Wednesday. 4

James Forrest - Game number 501 for the legend himself, he made a couple of nice runs towards the end that caused the visitors problems. 3

Adam Idah - Was unlucky not to break his duck this afternoon, as his well-taken finish was offside in the build-up. The goals will come. 4

Luis Palma - Will need to do more if he is to take Maeda’s spot in the team. Played a nice pass to Taylor who was offside in Idah’s goal. Falkirk next week could be his time to shine in the cup. 3

Luke McCowan - What a moment for the boyhood fan. He scored the second goal, which ended today’s game as a contest. Taking a good first touch, he got the ball out of his feet before striking to Gordon’s right. The keeper got a touch but failed to keep it out, making sure McCowan got his first goal for his new club. Already looking to be a splendid bit of business by Celtic. 5
