Why are Celtic in the hunt for a new manager?
After two seasons in the role and winning five out of a possible six trophies, Postecoglou was approached by Spurs regarding their vacant managerial post. Tottenham finished eighth last season, missing out on European football altogether on the final day to Aston Villa.
Less than 72 hours after the Scottish Cup final, Celtic’s manager was gone. In truth, it was no surprise, as the move had been reported in the press for the whole week leading up to the final at Hampden, in which Celtic secured more silverware.
Who are the current favourites?
This has been an ever-changing landscape, with betting odds constantly changing as new information gets reported daily.
The two names currently leading the way with the bookmakers are Manchester City assistant Enzo Maresca and former boss Brendan Rodgers. It has been reported recently that both are high on the board’s list for potential Postecoglou replacements, with further talks scheduled to take place this week ahead of appointing a new manager.
Other names such as Bodø/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen and ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter are just two of the names that have been linked to the post over the past week, but their odds have lengthened since being speculated on.
More recently, former Norwich and Borussia Monchengladbach manager Daniel Farke’s name has been mentioned, but his odds have also widened. This is also the case for Francesco Farioli, whom the Celtic board reportedly spoke with, but he is now considered an outsider despite impressing in dialogue with the hierarchy.
Now it would seem that Maresca and Rodgers are now the two preferred candidates in the Celtic hierarchy’s managerial search.

The latest developments
Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail reported on Sunday night that both chief executive Michael Nicholson and chief financial officer Chris McKay travelled to Rodgers’ holiday home in Mallorca in order to hold talks with the Northern Irishman.
McGowan also reported that Maresca, Farke and Knutsen are still in the frame for the role, but these developments seem to point to the board making Rodgers their prime candidate for the job.
Previously, it was thought that Maresca was solely in line for the job, putting talks on hold regarding his future until after Manchester City’s Champions League final against Inter Milan.
Currently a coach working under Pep Guardiola, Maresca’s only senior managerial experience came at Parma, where he was dismissed after just 14 games at the Serie B side. However, he did lead Manchester City’s U23 team to a Premier League 2 win the previous season, playing an attractive brand of football in the process.
Unfortunately for him, these latest developments regarding Rodgers have put a spanner in the works for the Italian's hopes of securing the post.
Rodgers left Celtic in February 2019 after a successful two-and-a-half years at the club, winning seven out of a possible seven trophies during his tenure. His departure midway through the 2018-19 season to Leicester City left a sour taste for many associated with the club, with Neil Lennon having to pick up the pieces following his move down south.

Who will get the job?
As things stand, it looks as if a return to the club for Rodgers is becoming increasingly likely. He has been made the odds-on favourite, overtaking Maresca in the process. With key members of the Celtic hierarchy making the trip out to his holiday home last weekend, it seems that bringing Rodgers back to the club is now the priority in this recruitment process.
