Celtic are through to the this season's Scottish League Cup final, following a comprehensive 6-0 win over Aberdeen at Hampden next month. 

As such, Brendan Rodgers and his players now look forward to a Glasgow derby final against Rangers.  

Philippe Clement's side staged a second half comeback to beat Motherwell 2-1 in the tournament's other semi-final, setting the stage for a Glasgow derby showdown in December. 

Having also overcome Hibs 3-1 and Falkirk 5-2 in previous rounds, Celtic have dominated every one of their League Cup outings so far. 

The Parkhead side have lifted the trophy 21 times in their history, most recently in February 2023, during Ange Postecoglou's final season in charge. Current Celtic manager Rodgers has won the Scottish League Cup on three occasions.

Scottish League Cup history and format 

First formed as the Southern League Cup in 1940 (when the Scottish Cup was suspended amid wartime restrictions), the once regional competition spent the next several years growing into what was first known as the Scottish Football League Cup.

Launched in earnest at the start of the 1946/47 season, the Scottish League Cup competition is the oldest national league cup in existence.

Once consisting of a straight-knockout format, a league phase was introduced in 2016/17 within which 40 teams now compete – 38 league clubs who are not participating in UEFA competitions, and two teams outside of the league.

In this phase, three points are assigned for wins and a single point for draws, however if matches are tied after 90 minutes, a penalty shoot-out grants the winning team an extra bonus point. Eight group winners and three runners-up progress to the tournament's second round, at which stage the other five UEFA competition participants join.
