Atletico Madrid were told to stump up £25m if they wanted to sign Celtic star Matt O'Riley in January, according to a report.

The La Liga giants had a bid rejected for the Denmark international in the winter window.

However, this was swiftly booted into touch by the Scottish champions.

A new report has emerged claiming the offer was an initial loan until the end of the season, with an obligation in place to permanently buy O'Riley for £18m this summer.

Media outlet Tipsbladet has revealed some of the finer details of the negotiations, which certainly seem to have been short-lived.

They claim that Atleti's bid was rejected almost immediately, as Celtic chiefs told their Spanish counterparts that they would only consider offers of £25m.

The report states that the La Liga side 'did not respond', as the potential for any deal to be done fizzled out.

The player's contract in Glasgow's east end doesn't expire until the summer of 2027.

He has notched up 10 goals and 12 assists this season.

O'Riley has also attracted interest from both Girona and Inter Milan in recent times.

Just over 24 hours after Atletico's bid emerged, Brendan Rodgers revealed he 'won't be going anywhere.'
