Everything that Luke McCowan said after Celtic's 3-0 Scottish Premiership win over Motherwell at Fir Park

That was your first start for the club, it couldn't have gone much better than that, could it?

It was great. It went about as smoothly as I could have hoped. A three-nil victory. It’s good just to be out there and helping the team get the three points and impact the game.

What was your reaction when the manager told you you were starting?

Just as any other. You’ve got to stay calm. It’s something I want to be doing. It’s not as if I’ve won the lottery to get a start. You've got to work hard to get that. I think I was saying that to my mindset coach yesterday, it was just a case of being frustrated about not playing and it means you're doing something well and I was. To then get the nod to start shows the manager's got a bit of trust in me and I kind of need to go and prove that I deserve a start and deserve to be playing and I think I've done well enough to do that.

Can you talk us through your goal?

I tried to pass the ball to Kyogo (Furuhashi). The boy has shut it off and I put it through his legs. I kind of got a nick off him and put it in the bottom corner.

You had a few chances, shots from outside the box as well, before your goal. Does that show your stature in the team already that you're saying to players, give me the ball, I'll take the strike from 25 yards no matter what, and you've scored within 30 minutes?

Well, you need to show that in training, I try to do that as well. Obviously, you watch Cal doing that as well week in and week out, so it just kind of falls naturally that somebody else needs to go and do it. If it needs to be me it needs to be me, but we've got players that have so much ability in that squad that it doesn't need to just be me that's doing that. I’ve seen Reo (Hatate) taking a few from outside the box, Paolo's (Bernardo) done it for years now and I just wish I'd probably put more away. I think my ratio wasn't great today, but it was just good to get the goal from outside the box.

Can you tell us about your mindset coach?

When I was at Dundee before, I worked with him for maybe six months before I came here, and now as soon as I knew I was coming here I knew I was going to need to keep him because it's going to be a different kind of situation. We speak all the time, week in and week out we're talking and it's just kind of having a conversation with your dad or your uncle but being a lot more professional about it and he's been really good for me.

You seem to have taken this all in your stride, nothing seems to have fazed you, has all that helped along the way?

Aye well, it's a game of football at the end of the day, I know I've worked hard to get here, I've been told by numerous people at the club that once you're here it's about showing you deserve to be here and I'm not going to get all excited. When you come here as a fan, everybody can hype it up and make it a lot more than what it is, but I've got to go there and perform, it's about getting three points and doing that game by game it's got to show that, so that's my kind of job.

Is that the big change Luke, that you arrived kind of living your dream, but it's a job and a profession and you've got to get it done?

It's like any other promotion in a job isn't it, you get excited when you first get there, but as soon as you're there you can't just put the tools down and stop doing it, you need to go and graft away and put the hard work in, get myself fitter, get myself in the team and make impacts, not just run about and make a couple of passes. It's about scoring goals and getting assists, so I need to try and do that.

That's really important to you isn't it, people talk about living your best life, but you want to really make an impact here, be a first-team regular and it was something that you kind of said when you came in, it's not just playing bit parts here and there, but gradually you're getting there?

Exactly, I know the squad here is probably about 24, 26 amazing players, so you've got to make sure you're training well and playing well and you've got chances to keep in that squad, not just get in the starting team. So for the manager to put me in the starting team today shows that he's got a lot of faith in me, but I need to reward him back by doing things like scoring and getting assists, so I just need to keep at it.

With Callum being out injured today and it was Alistair Johnson who was the captain, did you see yourself being one of the leaders as well, I know you were captain at Dundee, but did you see yourself leading the team through alongside Alistair Johnson or is it more of a team effort?

Yeah, I think there's a lot of boys, even boys that aren't starting, Greg (Taylor) and Cam (Carter-Vickers) who's on the bench, big voices people in the changing room. I think I just need to bide my time with that, I'm not going to go in there shouting and bawling, these guys are league winners, I need to learn off of them first and then through that, I'll find my voice and whatever. On the pitch you want to try and help them as much, but again it's a different kind of game for me. Second balls and doing the channel runs is where I was at, but now it's about position-based football, it's about winning the ball back as quickly as we can and I'm learning that week by week and games like today and performances like today show that I'm learning and being a bit of a sponge and going for that.

Are you a shouter and a bawler normally?

Aye, a few boys in Dundee will tell you that!

Are you reining yourself in?

I need to rein myself in, I need to bide my time, as I said there there's league winners in the changing room, I can't go in and start demanding things, they've already put a demand on themselves, they're demanding off of me now. So I'll find my voice through time.’

Is that the kind of discussion you have with your mind coach?

Exactly, that's exactly what we say, there's no rush to it, we've got an amazing captain, and an amazing manager whose voice is huge in there, but as I said there are about 11 players in there that have good voices and they just speak every day and speak to me as well and show me what I need to do within the game and the team.

Are you looking forward to coming up against your former team on Wednesday?

I cannot wait. Obviously after the back of that as well, it'll be nice hopefully. But we know it's going to be a hard game as always, but we're looking forward to it and as soon as the game finished there we knew our eyes were on Wednesday and it's just game by game now.

Have you adapted off the pitch as well?

Yeah, I don't leave my house! You can get caught up in all the hype, but as I said there it's just about staying calm and keeping your life as normal as possible, but it's been great, I've got to move back home as I said, I've got to see family more, friends more, so it's been great.

Does your humour help you to deal with these situations?

Aye. I've got a few mates that will tell me if I think I was getting too big or too whatever, but it's just surrounding yourself with nice people and a good family and you kind of go for it and it keeps your life as normal as possible.
