"It feels like a new lease of life for me."

Ten simple words that were spoken by David Turnbull after the 4-2 victory over Ross County. The midfielder scored two and was involved in another goal as he earned the Player of the Match award for his display which was as assuring as it was affirming.

Brendan Rodgers seems to like the Scotland international a lot. Ange Postecoglou adopted a more laissez-faire approach with the player he nicknamed "The Bull". The Aussie's era is over and Rodgers is a man at work.

The former Motherwell man could well be about to have a timely renaissance. Turnbull is into the final year of his contract, and after his recent performance, many will be asking whether a new deal will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.

That's up to Turnbull by and large, but he has one thing going for him. He has an admirer in Rodgers. That's handy because he only needs to impress the manager and nobody else. He does possess natural ability—oodles of it.

As Rodgers opined on the possibility of a new deal for the 24-year-old: "He’s a talent. I remember seeing him when I was first up here and I liked his game and he maybe just hasn’t quite hit the heights of what his talent is.

"I spoke to him in pre-season and told him it would be a shame if you don’t achieve what you can do at a club like this, because you have the talent, but you have to be a working talent, and you have to be able to run and be aggressive in your game. If you can do that, then your qualities will come through. It’s a door that’s open for him.”

The key phrase here is "it's his responsibility." Turnbull will decide his future. He also has to be strong and consistent and prove that he can deliver in big games when it matters if he gets the chance. Ironically he may well turn out to be that creative driving force that Celtic have lacked since Tom Rogic decided to call it a day at Parkhead.

Rodgers can help him unlock his talent but there's no doubting who has to make it happen. So far, so good. The Northern Irishman's selection against the Staggies, where he opted for Turnbull over Reo Hatate, was a warning shot across every Celtic player's bow.

There will be no comfort zone under Rodgers now. He has no favourites. Unlike his predecessor and contrary to the Aussie's public proclamations, Hatate was one of his cherished few and an automatic starter. It's Turnbull's responsibility to flip that mindset on its head.

There was also something very telling about Matt O'Riley's defence of his team-mate in the aftermath of flag day. The duo performed media duties and O'Riley had his say on his engine room starting partner for the day: "He (Turnbull) deserves it as well. Let's be honest, it was pretty tough for you last year, wasn't it?"

"In terms of he is too good not to play football in my opinion. I think last season in terms of application, especially off the pitch, he just got on with his work every day. Now hopefully he can reap the rewards going forward."

If ever you wanted to know about how a player is perceived within his own dressing room by his peers, then this was it. You can only deduce from O'Riley's words that Turnbull's attitude has always been spot-on. No dummy spitting going on here.

In fact, here we have a player who is desperate to stay at Celtic and prove that he wants to be a success. It was also telling because O'Riley was more or less stating that Turnbull still has so much to offer in case anybody had forgotten that. If the Ross County performance is anything to go by and the young Scot can prove it consistently, then the award of a new deal will be imminent. 

The list of players who Rodgers has resurrected and improved during his managerial career is endless. Turnbull could be about to add his name to that burgeoning register, as there is no better manager on planet football to learn from. Just ask the likes of Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and James Maddison.

Rodgers has already given Turnbull his pre-season pep talk and it already feels like a new lease of life to the player. Funny that, isn't it? You do get the impression that Rodgers wants his version of "The Bull" to run amok in the proverbial china shop.
