Celtic secured a traditional league and cup double last season, clinching their 54th Scottish Premiership championship and their 42nd Scottish Cup in the process. 

Brendan Rodgers' side finished top of Scottish football's top tier with 93 points, eight points above closest rivals Rangers, marking their third consecutive league triumph between 2022 and 2024. 

The Scottish Premiership is the top tier of Scottish football. First formed in 1890 as the Scottish Football League, Scotland's top tier has been renamed several times in the intervening period – having been known simply as the Scottish Premier League between 1998 and 2013. 

Contested by 12 teams each year, a typical Scottish Premiership season runs for 38 games, with the league splitting into two separate halves after 33 games. At this point, the top six teams play their remaining fixtures against each other, with the same set-up applied to the bottom six. Scottish Premiership standings

With the league's full complement of 38 games played, Celtic topped the Scottish Premiership with 93 points. Rangers finished in second place with 85 points, while Hearts finished third with 68 points. Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Dundee filled out the rest of the top six, with 56 points, 47 points and 42 points respectively.

In the bottom six of the Scottish Premiership table, Aberdeen lead the way with 48 points, with Hibs behind on 46. Motherwell are next with 43 points, after which Ross County, St Johnstone and Livingston follow on 35 points, 35 points and 25 points respectively.

There are 38 Scottish Premiership games per season. After 33 games, the league table is split into two halves, with each set of six teams playing only against each other; one half vying for the championship, the other playing to avoid relegation. 

 When is the next Celtic v Rangers game? 

Celtic and Rangers played each other five times during the 2023/24 season, the latest of which was the Scottish Cup Final 2024 at Hampden Park on Saturday, May 25. Adam Idah's goal in the 90th minute was all that separated the sides on the day.
